Film Music Composer Michael Kamen Dies
November 19, 2003 - London
Top film composer Michael Kamen died of a heart attack November
18 at his London home. Kamen, 55, had suffered from multiple sclerosis.
A three-time Grammy-winner, Kamen scored more than 75 films, including
the "Lethal Weapon" and "Die Hard" series. After
composing the score for "Mr. Holland's Opus," Kamen started
a foundation of the same name to donate musical instruments to schoolchildren.
The Juilliard-trained composer had one foot firmly rooted in rock'n'roll.
He got his start in the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble, which recorded
five albums for Atco and CBS. He later went on to provide orchestral
arrangements for Pink Floyd's "The Wall," as well as for
such artists as George Harrison, Eurythmics and Metallica. Kamen
also co-wrote a number of pop hits, including Bryan Adams' "Everything
I Do (I Do It for You)," which spent seven weeks atop the Hot
100 and, at 6 million copies worldwide, is one of the top-selling
singles of all time.
