Stuart Laughton Rejoins Canadian Brass
September 3, 2003 - Toronto
After
a 32-year absence, Canadian trumpeter Stuart Laughton has rejoined
the Canadian Brass! He was already a teenage prodigy in 1970 when
he became a founding member of Canadian Brass along with current
co-founders Chuck and Gene. After one year with the fledgling group,
Stuart accepted an opportunity to attend the prestigious Curtis
Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Gilbert
Johnson.
Immediately following his tenure at Curtis, Stuart was appointed
Principal Trumpet at La Scala Opera House in Italy, by Claudio Abbado.
Stuart subsequently returned to Canada where he began a family
and developed an impressive career. He is of course well-known throughout
North America as a successful trumpet soloist, having performed
in many of the venues frequented by Canadian Brass.
Along with his own performing skills, Stuart has made a significant
contribution to the performing world by establishing Opening Day
Recordings (www.openingday.com), a label that has given many fine
Canadian classical artists an opportunity to be heard on an international
stage.
What a wonderful turn of events for us in the Brass to be able
to welcome back such a major talent and contributor to the current
music scene!
A word from Stuart: "Yes, you can go home again!"
I am absolutely delighted to be rejoining the Canadian Brass. This
was the first brass quintet I had ever played in, which only I can
claim. I couldn't help noticing that the Brass became incredibly
popular as soon as I left!
I have always followed the Canadian Brasss unprecedented
and remarkable career with keen interest, and I have marveled at
their ability to sustain an enviable level of excellence and wonderful
sense of camaraderie for over thirty years. What's the secret? I
guess I will soon find out--I believe there is something quite special
at work.
My intentions now are to be the best possible match and foil for
my new colleague, Joe Burgstaller, and to contribute some of my
own personality to Canadian Brass. I feel truly honoured (note the
Canadian spelling) to follow such great trumpet names as Ron, Fred,
Jens and Ryan. For the past twelve years I have performed with organist
William OMeara in the Laughton & OMeara Duo, and
for six years I have been a member of True North Brass, a truly
formidable ensemble. I will give my final concert with William at
Harvard University (Adolphus Busch Hall) on October 26 and will
depart True North Brass after concerts in Ontario later that same
week. It has been a great privilege to be associated with all these
fine artists. I feel that I have grown immensely as a musician collaborating
with them over the years, and I am gratified to be carrying their
best wishes with me as I join Canadian Brass.
My new colleagues have been incredibly generous and helpful to
me while getting up to speed -- far, far beyond what was necessary
-- and I will always be grateful for that. And now I'm looking forward
to meeting Canadian Brass fans around the world!
Sincerely, Stuart Laughton
