Chris Cooper Departs, Jeff Nelsen Arrives

August 27, 2000 - Toronto

Thanks Chris!  - open letter from Canadian Brass, August 27, 2000

We have been extremely fortunate over the long run of the Canadian Brass to associate ourselves with really stellar human beings.  We know that our fans have treated us like a family and we attribute our longevity to this support.  Chris Cooper is a fine example of a wonderful human being and horn player who has made a great contribution to the legacy of Canadian Brass.

From Chris' point of view, every CD we make garners a Grammy Nomination!  Every season includes concerts at Lincoln Center.  Every two years we receive honorary doctorates. China, Spain, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Alaska, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, Japan and the USA are all regular stops (oh, and Canada .....).

It has been a great two years performing with you, Chris. We shall always remember your audition (read, "first concert") for us in front of 50,000 people at the Proms Concerts in London.

Good luck from your buddies,
Chuck, Gene, Jens and Ryan

Leaving Canadian Brass - by Chris Cooper

To all the fans I have met and all the friends I have made...

To all the wonderful people who follow the life of the Canadian Brass, I wish to say good-bye.

I have spent the last two years having the most incredible experience in the world.  I have toured the planet, I have played in the greatest halls, and I have met the most amazing people.  This life has been a dream come true, but it has also been hard for me.  I feel that I am unable to continue our tour schedule and make the sacrifices necessary to this way of life.

The Canadian Brass has been a wonderful place for me to fulfill dreams and ambitions, and it would be unfair of me to hold anything back from my friends.  I want the Canadian Brass to succeed and grow beyond the limits we have imagined so far.  To do that requires more than I can give.  I love to play the horn for you all.  I will miss being in the Canadian Brass, but I must let someone else help move the group forward.

The new horn player, Jeff, is great.  He is filled with fire and will be the perfect person to continue in a great tradition.

Thank you all for making this the most amazing two years.  I am sad to go but excited to go home.

Cheers to all, Chris

Jeff Nelsen now plays with Canadian Brass.

Canadian Brass announces the appointment of Jeff Nelsen to become their new horn player effective September 1, 2000.

Jeff is a great addition to the Canadian Brass--in fact, an almost inevitable addition.  He was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Jens' home as well.  He studied at McGill University in Montreal and performed in the Montreal Symphony before joining the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.  In Vancouver he played fourth horn in Marty Hackleman's section, Marty having been a member of the Canadian Brass from 1983-1986.  Marty left Vancouver last year, and Jeff turned down the offer for principal horn position in 2000 to join our group.

Jeff brings incredible performing and stage skills to the Brass. We are looking forward to working with him.
