Ron Romm Leaves After 29 Great Years

May 3, 2000 - Toronto

After 29 years with the Canadian Brass Ron Romm is striking off on his own. Ronnie joined the group in 1971 after the Brass' first trumpeter Stuart Laughton (then 18) decided he needed to go off to the Curtis Institute. Fred Mills - not yet part of the group at that time - suggested that Gene and I give Ron a call.

Having just spent an exceedingly uncomfortable hot summer in New York City, Ron relished the thought of moving north. Although only 24 at that time, Ron brought a wonderful blend of jazz and classical abilities to our young group. His extraordinary performing abilities are well documented by over 50 CD's, half a dozen videos, several TV specials, and uncounted concerts and masterclasses.

The concert at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) in Regina, SK, Canada, on June 2, 2000 marked Ron's last performance as a member of Canadian Brass.
After the show, Ron left his performance shoes behind - one of the Canadian Brass' trademarks.

Looking for a new player for a group such as ours is always a daunting task. Although performing ability is of paramount importance, the new trumpet player will be joining "family." Ron will be missed -- The search is on!
