Introducing the Hornsling

Just like in Peter Schickele's opera "Hornsmoke"you too can become a Horn Slinger.

This beautiful piece of horn equipment was co-developed by former Canadian Brass hornist David Ohanian (CB 1986-1998) and internationally recognized brass instrument enhancer/repairman Ron Partch. I began using this strap 4 years ago, and I instantly and permanently fell in love with it.

Whether sitting or standing, the weight of my horn became a non-issue. It is its simplicity, its irreducible bare-bones construction that makes it so comfortable, stable, and such a facilitator of freeing the left-hand fingers. David explains his practical theories that went into its long road of development.

“The CB Hornsling is simply the best way to hold a horn ever devised. It takes the weight away from the pinky finger and puts it at the fleshy, muscular part of the hand. After installation, the finger hook may be removed. Since the fourth and fifth fingers are connected to the same tendon, the Hornsling frees up the movement of the fourth finger, allowing faster fingering. You will immediately notice a lighter feeling to the left hand and a general ease and relaxation will replace the former rigidity. The most telling comparison comes later. After a week or two, try playing a horn with finger hook only. You won’t believe the difference.”

Ron Partch says a few words about the construction and installation of the Hornsling.

“The sling is made of carbon reinforced leather. The carbon fiber is glued and sewn between two layers of glove weight leather. The piece that is perpendicular to the hand loop has Velcro for easy adjustment and will fit any horn.

Installation of the sling takes about ten minutes. The brass stud must be soldered to the bell stem between the lead pipe and finger hook. The sling should support the entire weight of the instrument and free the fourth finger of any strain. During installation take time with your repair technician to ensure positioning of the sling suits your hand position.

Once installed, the sling will not stretch.”The sling also fits into any horn case. I’ve had to cut slots into other cases to fit hand stabilizers in the past. There is no need for any modifications to your case, in this case…pun intended.

David, Ron and I believe this simple piece of equipment to be the essential piece of new horn ‘gear’ to make noticeable improvements in left-hand ease and comfort. We hope you’ll give it a try to see the difference for yourself.
